The concept is simple but powerful: when you wake up at the end of a sleep cycle — during light sleep — you feel alert and ready to go. But wake up in the middle of deep sleep, and you'll experience that dreaded groggy feeling scientists call "sleep inertia."
The 90-Minute Cycle
A typical sleep cycle lasts approximately 90 minutes (ranging from 70–120 minutes in different individuals). During each cycle, your brain progresses through four distinct stages, each serving a critical function for your health and cognition.
Stage N1 — Light Sleep (5–10 minutes)
This is the transition from wakefulness to sleep. Your heartbeat slows, muscles relax, and you may experience sudden twitches or a sensation of falling (hypnic jerks). During N1, you can be easily awakened — this is why power naps work. This stage accounts for roughly 5% of your total sleep time.
Stage N2 — Medium Sleep (20–40 minutes)

Stage N3 — Deep / Slow-Wave Sleep (20–40 minutes)
Also called slow-wave sleep (SWS), this is the most physically restorative stage. Your brain produces slow delta waves, blood pressure drops, and the body releases growth hormone.
